There is indeed a whole lot of decent apps to chose from. some ain't free, but they're mostly worth the investment anyways.

This one gets me excited - Jazzmutant's Lemur as an iPad app.

Ipads suck huge eggs! i have an Ipad 2 and a 3 and neither is capable enough to run even the simplest synths on a professional basis! glitchy and full of dropouts on nearly everything i have tried sofar, whether free apps or paid for apps!
better of with a quadcore android tablet imho and cheaper at that but hey if you buy apple your buying an image not a tool.

I like working with wood and building such things together just like the early days with little electronic projects.
