differential pitch tool for vocalists...

Postby doug4350 on Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:10 am

Howdy folks,

It's been a while since I've been a regular here, but I drop in from time to time. Been very busy with the life thing & wish I was free enough of it to do the things I like (including electronic music).

Here's my delimma...

It's been another long day and I had my first introduction to my daughter's vocal coach at her session earlier today.

We talked about the issue of pitch and I thought it might be possible to help vocalists with pitch by having a differential comparator that would queue the vocalist when they drift out of the pitch window. I guess this is more of a vocal excercise tool. My first thought was to have an oscilliscope display that would sync the frequencies between the oscillator and the vocalist and would give a visual queue to the accuracy of the pitch.

So, for example, there would be two signal displays on the scope:
one for the vocalist
one fot the oscillator

If the vocalist was sharp of the oscillator frequency, the vocalist signal display would "drift" to the right, and correspondingly drift left if they were flat. Kind of like an electronic tuner.

Hey, that gave me an idea.

In the mean time, do any of you folks have a recommendation?

Thanks,
-Doug

you could use trogs autocorrelation to determine if the voice is stable in pitch, see viewtopic.php?f=1&t=10290&start=30
then there was another audio to pitch you could use to generate sinewaves with voice input, dont know where this is at, look for audio to midi, or guitar synth or similar.

You could also try your scope idea using the schematic I posted HERE
It allows multiple scope traces that are accurately synchronised, and you can choose any input to act as a trigger source for all the traces - I made a 'strobe' guitar tuner in SynthEdit many years ago using this technique and, although tricker to use than the usual 'up/down needle/LED' type, it was capable of incredible accuracy.
Feel free to use any schematics and algorithms I post on the forum in your own designs - a credit is appreciated (but not a requirement).
Don't stagnate, mutate to create. Without randomness and serendipity the earth would be just another barren rock.

trogluddite, you da man!

I finally had some time today to check out your schematic. I like it and it looks like just what I need. Not to mention my daughter thinks it's cool too.

I'm looking forward to tailoring it more to our needs, but the core is there and well done.

I also u/g'ed to 2.03, and that is a very fair upgrade price for this cool tool! Glad to contribute to Malc and the crew that makes it happen. Looking forward to the day when I don't have to have a day job and can really get into electronic music full time.

Thanks,
-Doug

Very glad you like it, thanks. :)
Feel free to ask if there are any mod's to the scope that you need any help with.
