SideChain inputs

Postby DhyanMikael on Wed Apr 06, 2011 5:42 pm

I woudl like to understand how I can create a plugin with SynthMaker that allows sidechaining. I did not find explicit information on this subject in the documentation.

I see that I can create a module which has more than one input. How do I define which is main input (the track the plug-in is located in) and which one is the sidechain input?

Thank you in advance for information on this subject!

Hi Mikael,
This will mostly depend on the routing capabilities of the host that you want to use the plugin with.
For example, I use Reaper as my sequencer, and that lets you use the inputs any way around that you like. But other sequencers may require that your main inputs are the first ones, and some don't allow side-chaining at all.
In SM, the order of inputs and outputs always goes from the top to the bottom, so for best compatability, I would suggest putting the inputs in the order...
Left Input
Right Input
Side-chain Input
Doing it that way should mean that even on a sequencer with no side-chains (only stereo tracks), the main audio signal will still work OK.
Feel free to use any schematics and algorithms I post on the forum in your own designs - a credit is appreciated (but not a requirement).
Don't stagnate, mutate to create. Without randomness and serendipity the earth would be just another barren rock.

Hi Biver1000,
and welcome to the forum. You simply have to add an additional (sidechain) input in your plugin. Since SM provides only support for VST2.3 standard you can't handle it like VST3 plugins with Cubase. But it's possible even though a bit tricky to create sidechain routings inside Cubase for VST2 plugins. Take a look at the Cubase documentation.
